I was a great first baseman. No, I wasn't playing college or professional baseball (I know, you're disappointed. Sorry I failed you.), but high school intramural softball. I would catch every ball thrown at me, no grounders got past me, and I never dropped a pop fly. Add in my decent hitting and my team's winning ways, and the result is that I was voted to an intramural softball all-star team.
I broke my wrist on one of the very first plays of the all-star game. We were trying to get a runner out at first and the throw from the shortstop was off target. I knew I had no chance of catching it, but I hoped I could at least bat it down so that the runner couldn't get to second base off of our error. As I reached out to bat down the ball, the runner ran into my hand and broke my wrist. It wasn't a bad break, after only a few weeks in a cast and a few months in a brace my wrist was completely back to normal.
Breaking my wrist that way is a one-in-a-million event. I could play in or watch a thousand more softball games and probably never see anyone break their wrist that way again. I had to make a choice that day: I could decide that softball is a dangerous sport or a safe sport.
My softball injury is a silly example of a one-in-a-million event. I'm sure there are very few, if any, people on this earth who are scared of playing softball. However, there are other one-in-a-million events that could be holding you back. Are you scared of driving because of a blown-out tire or accident? Are you scared to take on work projects because you failed on a project one time? Are you scared of flying? Scared of trying over?
One in a million is just an expression. Its implied meaning is that a one-in-a-million occurrence is unlikely happen again. Are troubles in your past keeping you from having your fullest life now? Some problems are unavoidable, but a lot of the things that hang us up are not only avoidable, but they are highly unlikely to ever happen again.
Think about the things that scare you, if you know that they are unlikely to happen again, then it's time to step forward and leave those things in the past. Sometimes it merely takes the willingness to move forward and you can accomplish it. If that's not enough to move forward, then get help (mentoring, counseling, church, or a counselor).
